Relative geography and other starting ?s

I've got a few ideas for characters, but I had some questions first.

About how far is Red Mountains from the City?

How long after the End is it? A few years? A few decades? Generations?

You mentioned perhaps a settlement is in Red Mountains, is there perhaps more than one?

Would any small settlements anywhere have survived with some structure and population intact?

Let's see..

I'd say the most direct route to the City from the Mountains would be around 250 miles, but that would also be the most difficult route.

It's about eighty-one hundred years after the end, closer to one hundred.

There is a small village in the mountains, but the locals around believe it to be only myth. Other dwellings in the mountains are barely large enough to be called a village, or they are only one or two houses.

There would be quite a few small towns across the country that survived intact, but anything larger than 30-50,000 would have been destroyed, aside from a few small and a few large cities.
